Message 2 years ago Specialty Z initially tuned my Z and Greg / Seb notieced that with the J&S knockbox, they heard more bottom end noise than they were comfortable with. When they came back last fall for the methanol tune - Greg mentioned it again.

Flash forward to this month. I had Tony Myrie @ BAM automotive in Philly pull the motor and check the rod bearings.

This is what we found.

This happens from detonation and we theorize this is from the Z's previous tunes --NOTE: the car did not have any audible detonatation on the dyno in the past. Greg stated that on the street and under load, the car is probably slightly/lightly detonating. I have about 40k miles on this IPP motor with occassional heavy abusive.

While we were there, I decided to put fresh bearings in the bottom (rod and main) - thanks Kyle at IPP for the bearings !!!

Since I had the motor pulled - I decided on a whim to see if I could sell my GT28RS turbos that recently dyno @ 690 rwhp.

3 days on classifieds and they were gone. I spoke to Greg / Seb and bought the 63trim GTX turbos and J&S knockbox.

GT28RS (extrude honed):

look at the blade pattern / compare the additional blades and the angle of the blades to the GT28RS turbo.

GTX 63 Trim :

and the J&S knockbox - we didn't install this yet

* ask Seb to increase the harness length so that the box will fit in the glove box. For a small charge this service can be provided *

Checking the wastegates cracking pressure

Tony installing aftermarket power steering pump

Using the RameyZ engine puller. My prototype Abler manifolds don't provide any provision for heat shielding as the MS manifolds due.

We noticed that the rubber boot for the turbo outlet was beginning to burn through from the heat. In the picture below you can see the termotech wrap I placed around it. Love my MS turbo inlet pipes and BDE motor mounts are a must.

Going back in :

* the hat was free from a customer - so he claims LOL *

Driveline time :

We moved my EGTs from the compressor housing to the downpipes.

Fits just as tight as a JWT BB700 turbo

SZ website state that their 5 puck clutch can handle 800ft/lbs torque. Guess I'll find out if that is true :)

pictures really don't due the full 3 inch exhaust justice.

OK - this is what you have been waiting for -- well short of a dyno.

I have had JWT Sport 500 / JWT Sport 600 / GT28RS. So this is my 4rth turbo upgrade in 17 years of Z ownsership.

Driving observations: These turbos ROCK.

1) At base boost which is 15psi --it feels like 17psi on GT28RS. I can tell the power is there. Boost response is good but comparable to the GT28RS.

2) at 18psi - begin to hold the 'f' on. These turbos spool pretty fast --faster than the 28RS as the boost builds. 18psi feels insane as compares to the 28RS. Real strong. Feels like a 30rwhp increase.

These turbos have more max boost potential than my GT28RS setup. I got 26psi out of those at 690rwhp. I am hoping to get 30psi out of these at around 750rwhp. I think this is doable / attainable.

PS: I hear that SZ will be tuning in Delaware again this fall. Evidently there are quite a few cars in the PA/ NJ / DE / MD / VA area that want /still need tuning.

I would highly recommend - actually Greg / Seb both recommend - Tony Myrie for any Z needs. I don't just trust anyone with my Z and Tony is not just the tech head -he is a Z owner as well.

Tony provided me the measurements before and after and lookign at my Greddy oil pressure gauge --I have almost 100psi oil pressure on cold startup - no leaks no issues on pick up. He also converted my antifreeze to the new "blue stuff" from Nissan and performed a host of small "do-dads and hook-ups".
